When is the best time to trim shrubs and trees?

Shade trees and ornamental trees can be pruned any time during the spring summer or early fall. If you are pruning back whole limbs, keep in mind that if the cut left on the tree is larger than a Quarter, you should apply a pruning sealer, which acts as a bandage for the tree.
Fruit trees should be pruned in the in early spring before setting their buds to avoid lowering the total harvest yield.
Ornamental flowering shrubs can be trimmed at any time with the exception of Lilacs. If you trim lilacs too late in to the fall, you will be trimming off the buds they have already set for next spring.
